good evening. we are starting with breaking news out of san francisco. right now a man hunt is under way for a gunman in the city who shot a police officer. right now the man hunt is under way for that gunman. the police officer described as a 28-year-old male shot in the line of duty. the officer was rushed to san francisco general. we are told he was shot in the shoulder, and he is? stable condition right now. here's what we know so far. the shooting happened at 3:00 this afternoon in the mission district of the intersection of florida at 26th street. we are waiting for a news conference at san francisco general hospital for more in

fgs. people we talked to at the scene did not want their faces shown but said they heard the shots. >> we initially thought they were from a bb gun. within five minutes we heard the police sirens. >> there was an intense search for the suspect. police have not released a suspect description so far. we're going to keep you updated on that. watch for continuous coverage throughout the newscast and tonight at 6:00 p.m. right now developing news on the plane. a malaysian airlines plane that went missing yesterday. more than 200 people, including three americans, were on the flight when it lost contact with air traffic controllers. authorities have located two people, one austrian and one italian. they're alive and well and say their passports were stole opinion.

>> translator: three passengers listed on being on board are, in fact, safe and well. at least one of them had reported their passport stolen. an austrian foreign ministry spokesman said they had been listed on being on the flight to beijing, but the system came back telling them it was a stolen passport. a very similar situation. the foreign ministry in rome saying no italian was on board despite one being listed. as for the search if r the plane, in countries in the area, including the united states, sending ships and planes to help in the search. we know tracking the wreckage can take days. and locating the flight recorders could take months or even years. >> we've had no news. so i'm worried.

>> reporter: they apparentedly spotted two large oil slicks. each slick about six miles wide. we don't know if it has come from that malaysian airlines flight. the search now hampered by the fact that it's the middle of the night in that part of the world. it's not likely that we'll get much more information before daylight tomorrow. >> this was a boeing 777. the same kind of jet flown by asiana airlines that crashed last year. investigators have pointed to pilot error as the cause of that crash. now stay with nbc bay area for continuing coverage of the story. we also go to nbcbayarea.com to sign up for breaking news alerts. a man is dead after a swept through an oakland home this morning. the fire broke out just before 2:00 a.m.

a 32-year-old man was seriously injured and later died because of the fire. investigators say that fire may have started in the kitchen. today for the very first time we're getting a firsthand look inside the central subway project that will connect south of market and north beach in san francisco. nbc bay area went 70 feet below ground where the muni tunnel was being dug. they are doing the work around the clock. they're digging 50 feet per day and at one point having to dip 100 feet below ground to have to get along the bart tunnel underneath market street. and things got tight. >> 100 feet down to make a perpendicular crossing of the bart tunnel. and the separation ranged from seven feet to ten feet. literally from the invert of the bottom of the tunnel to the top of our tunnel was a seven to ten foot separation. >> the project has come under

fire for the $1.5 billion price tag. san francisco lee says it's one of the most important projects for the future of san francisco. it's expected to open in 2019. a warning for drivers. many r work on the golden gate bridge coming soon. the bridge is going to have to be closed for more than two days. the closure is expected to happen on a weekend in october. officials say the golden gate bridge has never been closed for more than three hours. and that's usually because of bad weather. the project is expected to cause $20 million. today democratic movers and shakers headed to los angeles for the party's political convention. nancy pelosi was a keynote speaker. major focus for this year's gathering, governor jerry brown is running for an unprecedented

newscast with. san francisco police have found the car of a gunman who opened fire on a police officer earlier this afternoon, wounding that officer. the officer shot in the shoulder. what we know about the officer, he is 28 years of age. a six-year veteran of the force shot in the shoulder. expected to be okay. this took place at 26th street and florida in san francisco's mission district. and again, updating all of this, they have found the suspect's car in daly city. no word on whether the suspect is in custody, but the vehicle used to escape the scene where the officer was shot in san francisco has been recovered. we'll keep you up to date ads more information comes in. they may be taking up space. you don't use them. a big push to get rid of old gadgets. the san jose sharks teamed up for today's electronics recycling event. sharks fans drove to drop off old tvs and vcrs.

updating you on breaking news. it happened at 26th street and florida in the city's mission district. it happened at 3:00. an officer, we are being told, was executing a normal traffic stop when someone in the other vehicle pulled a gun and shot the officer in the shoulder.

we are talking about changes coming. even though we are talking about rain for tomorrow. at least in the evening hours. it's really going to be maxed out across the board for your sunday. you can see we're looking at the cloudy skies. skies have really clouded over. this is what we're going to wake up to tomorrow morning. not as warm as it was for today. highs back in the 60s. no more upper 70s like we saw today. we still may hit 70s in san jose. we are starting to see returns off the coast. some drizzle. and this is the drizzle and fog pushing in overnight. when we wake up tomorrow, expect that to be with you. we get the extra hour of daylight. 7:10 is the new sunset.

but unfortunately we do lose that hour of sleep for tonight. it's a mix of sun and clouds for the south bay. that's where we'll see the most sunshine. be it towards the peninsula, san mateo. belmont, you'll see more clou cover there. upper 60s in san francisco. wouldn't be surprised if you wake up to drizzle tomorrow and the low clouds hanging on tightly for the north bay. the east bay, liver more, tri-valley. you'll stay dry not going to see a whole lot of rain until the sun goes down tomorrow. you're not going to see the rain until then. but in the north bay, showers arrive around 5:00 in the evening. this is going to be a pretty good rain for the north bay.

it really falls apart to the south. the rainfall amounts look like this. about half an inch. maybe a quarter of an inch in the north bay. but really not that much as this system moves farther south. you can see it really falls apart. it's really not a huge system. overall every drop does count. dry for tomorrow. drizzle at the coast. in the north bay, the same thing. then we see the heavy rain push in around 5:00 in the evening to the north bay. and then elsewhere, right around midnight. so it's not coming until we all go to bed. >> and today, what a day. time to play ball. opening day. one of many leagues play playing for the first time this season. great weather for a ball game or two, or if you really love the
